Jan Copeland – Ceramics

Jan, in her “spare” time, is now creating wonderfully unique ceramic totems for your home and garden, sculptures, and other interesting items. The articles on this page describe some of these projects

Ceramic Totems

Garden totems can be built in various sizes and color schemes.

Garden totems can be built in various sizes and color schemes.

A ceramic totem consists of several abstract or not-so-abstract objects through which passes an aluminum rod. Each ceramic object is individually sculpted and glazed in colors that complement one another and its surroundings.

In addition to the glazed ceramic objects on the totem, Jan can add items such as native stone and/or crystals

The totem can be placed in your flower garden or as a free-standing decorative object in your home.

Ceramic Lamps

Not only are the ceramic totems interesting as free-standing art for your home or garden, Jan is also incorporating the idea into desk or table lamps for your home.

Totem lamps can be fabricated in a number of sizes and color schemes.

Totem lamps can be fabricated in a number of sizes and colors. Each one is unique, and Jan will work with you to make your lamp just what you want!

Because the pieces that make up the totem are each custom and unique, lamps can be fabricated to fit well with any decor. The lamps can be assembled in a variety of finishes, from raku to earthy to fun, bright colors.

Lamps can be made in many different sizes, including small desk lamps, standard table lamps, and taller floor lamps.  Each ceramic object comprising the lamp is individually made and fired before threading it onto a metal support.

Sculpture

Along with the totems, Jan has also been creating a number of different bowls and abstract pieces to decorate your home or office.

These sculptures are created in different colors and styles.  Some customization of pieces is possible. Click on a small image below to view larger photos of these example pieces.

The “Natural State”

I started making various sizes of our wonderful state for special orders. In each of those items, I have highlighted various resorts, Lake Ouachita, farming areas, and home towns. Now I am getting requests for other states from customers. Funny how some things get started.

Odds and Ends

We also offer some decorative items in our store that are not locally made. This assortment is always changing so stop by from time to time to see what wonderful new items we have.

Jan’s Ceramics

A selection of my decorative and functional ceramics is always on hand and is always changing. All of these pieces are high fired and can be used as serving pieces, vases, platters, etc., or just for décor. I hand form the pieces in a free form way, and they usually take their own shape. I find this is a very relaxing and enjoyable way to work, compared with my day job of following patterns and being precise about every project.

Knives from Mike’s Collection

We have an ever-changing selection of custom made, new, and vintage knives. The prices are all over, so there is something for everyone.

Jan’s Autumn Leaves – November 21, 2014

All of the leaves in this collection used to be in my garden. There are elephant ears, umbrella magnolias, oak leaf hydrangea, and hosta represented.

I was fortunate to receive some art glass from friends who work with stained glass, and I included it in the firing process. Thanks Bob and Barb.

All of these pieces are high-fired and functional in use.

Indian Sculpture by Jan

Last month, Jan was feverishly putting together a number of totems and other sculptures to be displayed at the show, not only spending hours in her home studio, but also getting help from those who have previously purchased her works by borrowing items for the show!

For those of you who have not been able to see a lot of Jan’s art all in one place, a trip to Pine Bluff would be worth your while!

Congratulations, Jan!
